Flatland participant: a black woman shown from waist up holding a red cube device attached by long coloured wires to the shoulder of her black full length 3D suit.
Close up of an early prototype of the cube device which is black, held a hand.
Working on the eTextile elements: a close up of a woman’s hands and face, she is attaching thread to some rope knotted around a wooden strut, at floor level, which has knotted ropes attached.
The tech: a box containing the hardwire and wiring used with the cube device, a white cube is out of focus in the background with lots of colourful wiring. In the foreground is a black Velcro wrist strap with a small, blue computer board attached: this is a magnetometer, part of the tracking system used in the installation.
The waiting room: black and white photo. Four audience wearing black 3D suits sit in a row in a small corridor. An older actor wearing the same outfit stands at one end addressing them.
Training: four audience in 3D suits practice using their cube device before entering Flatland.
Part of the training room set: a desk in the corner of a concrete room holding colourful drawers and work lamps, with technical drawings on the wall.
The control room: a dark concrete room in which there are two desks arranged in an L-shape holding various computer hardware including 2 laptops and 3 additional screens showing bright images of software controls and live feeds from the installation. David and Tarim, wearing warm clothing, are seated working at them.
Within the installation: two infra red images where a woman appears as a greyed out figure wearing the 3D suit and wearing bone conducting headphones (BC headphones), holding the cube device in one hand in a pitch black space.
Within the installation: two infrared shots in a pitch dark space. Pic one: a greyed out figure of a woman in a 3D suit and BC headphones holds a cube device, and with the other hand touches a fabric panel set into a wall, eyes closed. Pic two: the woman is moving away, holding the cube behind her a greyed out man in a 3D suit touches the same fabric panel.
Within the installation: in infra red, a greyed out figure of a woman in 3D suit and and wearing BC headphones walks between rows of vertical ropes, touching them either side with her hands.
Within the installation: in infrared, a greyed out figure of a woman in 3D suit and BC headphones stands holding onto the vertical rope structure with both hands, looking up.
Within the installation: in infrared, the greyed out figure of a man wearing a 3D suit and BC headphones listens at the mouth of a large, ship funnel-like black pipe with a curved end of which there are several pipes in shot.
Within the installation: in infrared, the greyed out figure of a woman in 3D suit and BC headphones is about to enter a structure made of large black pipes. In the foreground is large ship-funnel like pipe with a curved end.
Within the installation: in infrared, a long, freestanding handrail is fixed near one wall; behind it, lengths of black rope are stretched between the floor and ceiling to form a tunnel. Further down the room is tall fabric structure like a circular tent. A greyed out figure of a person in 3D suit stands in the middle, slightly see through due to the exposure.
Within the installation: a greyed out figure of a woman in 3D suit and BC headphones, she is holding a cube device in one hand and smiling; behind her are criss-crossed black ropes.
Post-performance research session: five people in normal lighting sit round a circular table with white tablecloth, which has zips sewn into it in front of each of them. They look deep in thought.
Tech volunteer Theo holds a yellow cube device in both hands, explaining its working to volunteer Val. Both wear coats, and stand in the foyer of the installation location.
